SEPTEMBER 2026 - CUSTOM VS. CUSTOMIZED

Custom Home or Customized Home?  Understanding the difference before you build.

If you are planning a new home, you will encounter many builders who offer custom homes.  In fact, most residential builders use the word custom as a key part of their branding strategy.  Custom is almost always picking from predetermined set of floor plans and choosing finishes from a curated menu of options.  Essentially the homes design, layout, and overall direction have already been decided.  There is nothing wrong with this process and can often be the right solution if your needs closely match an existing plan.  This process is more accurately described as customizing a home plan rather than designing a custom home.

Is the home of your dreams truly custom or a customized version of a builder’s plan?  Choosing finishes or making the garage 2’ deeper is not the same as designing a home that enhances your lifestyle.

Customized begins with a plan, Custom begins with you!   The difference is where the process starts.

Ask yourself the question, was this home designed for me or modified for me.

Let’s face it construction cost are continuing to rise.  When I started designing homes construction costs were approximately $100/sf and now it’s very common to start at over $300/sf.  So, every square foot counts!  Investing your money wisely and creating a home that enhances your lifestyle can add real value to your life.

So, when is a custom home custom?

We believe that custom starts with you and that’s why we created our process of “Validated design from the inside out”.

Customized home design takes an existing plan and then manipulates it until it fits you.

Validated design from the inside out begins by asking you questions like,

  • What are your goals for this home?

  • What does your family dynamic look like?

  • How do live from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed?

  • What spaces bring your family together, and where do you need privacy

  • How can your site influence the design of your house and how can your house help you to understand your site

  • What priorities deserve more space in your home and what areas can be minimized

  • What areas of your current home enhance your life and what areas frustrate you

Only after fully understanding these questions does a meaningful plan begin to take shape.  Custom design address deeper questions: how do you move through the home, how does light enter the space and how does it change your experience of that space, and on and on.

Validated design from the inside out is focused on making sure every decision enhances your life and creates value in your life.  This does not mean that the design is unconstrained.  Our experience allows us to balance imagination with construction cost, efficiency, resale considerations, and how a home will be built.    The goal is not to make every room unusual.   The goal is to make every decision intentional.

So which approach is right for you?  Before choosing a building or an architect, as one simple question.  Will my home begin with an existing floor plan, or will the floor plan begin with me?

The answer will tell you whether you are customizing a builder plan or creating a home that is truly designed for you.
